Five Ways in Which a Drink Improves Your Sex Life, According to Science

Alcohol, despite being one of the few legal drugs in Spain along with tobacco, has been shown in several studies to be the cause of various diseases: from brain damage to some types of cancer, reasons why should never be consumed.

However, some studies have shown benefits derived from alcohol consumption: decrease cardiovascular risk – controversial, according to other studies – improve memory in some individuals and improve sexual relations.

Couples who drink together are more united

According to The Journals of Gerontology, the mutual consumption of alcohol by a couple or the mutual aversion to spirits are two of the characteristics that would be more linked to the happiness and union of a couple, since it is a shared thing long-term.

As a result, such long-term consumption or abstention would be a strengthening factor in a relationship. Also, on the other hand, having a drinking pattern opposite a partner – one member is a drinker and the other is not – increases the risk of having an unsatisfactory long-term relationship.

As a curiosity, a study published last year suggested that even a problem of alcoholism is not enough to break a couple: if both partners have a similar drinking habit, they are likely to remain as united as a couple whose members do not drink absolutely.

Better a drinker for a short-term relationship

According to the habit of alcohol consumption, one man will attract one type of women or another, according to a study published in 2016 in Evolutionary Psychology.

According to this study, those women who seek short-term relationships or adventures are more attracted to those men who use alcohol and tobacco.

Women seeking a long-term relationship or even a marriage are often interested in men who have moderate or no alcohol, as this would mean that they are able and willing to care for potential future children.

‘Solution’ to premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction?

Premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction are the two most common problems in men during a sexual relationship. However, although it may at first appear to be detrimental, alcohol has been shown to be able to delay and hinder orgasm in both men and women. This, in turn, could help prevent such premature ejaculation as a side effect.

In fact, some researchers have even come to recommend drinking alcohol as a treatment to control ejaculation times. It is a temporary solution, but it can be helpful at a point in time.

On the other hand, another study published in 2009 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine suggested that men who had moderate alcohol consumption were up to 30% less likely to suffer erection problems compared to men who had abstainers. Although the reason for this relationship is unknown, the shuffled hypothesis is that alcohol in moderate amounts can improve cardiovascular health, and therefore erections.

Alcohol is an aphrodisiac for women

Although the aphrodisiac effect of alcohol consumption was already known in popular culture, a 1994 study found that this was true, especially in women, according to The Independent.

Finnish and Japanese researchers concluded that women who consumed moderate amounts of alcohol had increased levels of testosterone in the body, but that effect did not occur in men. In addition, this effect was increased in women taking birth control pills.

The researchers suggested that this increase in body testosterone in women could lead, in turn, to an increase in their sexual desire.

Alcohol can improve orgasm

Although excessive alcohol can prevent orgasm in both men and women, if that orgasm can occur its intensity can be greater if the appropriate amount of this type of drinks is consumed.

A study published in The Journal of Sex Research concluded that those women who had drunk a couple of glasses claimed to feel more sexual pleasure.

Although the cause of this effect is unknown again, the shuffled hypothesis is that this low consumption of alcohol would be able to provoke relaxation and help individuals overcome their inhibitions and insecurities.
